FAQs
Common Questions By Shingle Type
Asphalt Shingles
How long do Atlas asphalt shingles last?
Most Atlas asphalt shingles carry a limited lifetime warranty on the shingles themselves. Real-world lifespan in Michigan typically runs 25–40 years depending on the product tier, attic ventilation, and weather exposure. Premium lines like Pinnacle® Pristine with Scotchgard™ protection are engineered for the longer end of that range.
What’s the difference between economy, standard, and premium asphalt shingles?
Economy shingles meet code and look clean, but use lighter-weight mats and fewer granules. Standard 3-tab and dimensional shingles add wind resistance and a longer warranty. Premium architectural shingles — like Atlas’s designer lines — add algae-resistant Scotchgard™ coating, heavier mats, enhanced impact ratings, and the coverage of the Atlas Signature Select® system when installed by a Platinum Certified contractor like Weather Vane.
Does being Atlas Platinum Certified change what warranty I get?
Yes. Weather Vane’s Atlas Platinum status unlocks the Atlas Signature Select® Roofing System — Atlas’s top-tier warranty package. It adds a 50-year workmanship warranty and non-prorated coverage that standard certified contractors cannot offer. The warranty covers both materials and labor for qualifying Atlas systems.
Can asphalt shingles be installed in Michigan winters?
Yes, with precautions. Shingle seal strips need temperatures above 40°F to self-seal; below that our crews hand-tab each shingle to ensure a proper bond. We install year-round when the roof deck is dry and safe to work on. If you have an active leak, we’ll tarp and stabilize immediately so the interior damage stops while we plan the right installation window.
Steel Shingles
Are steel shingles loud during rain or hail?
No — this is the most common misconception. Steel shingles are installed over solid decking with an underlayment, which absorbs sound the same way asphalt does. You won’t hear rain any louder than you do now. The “loud metal roof” reputation comes from exposed agricultural metal panels with no decking underneath — a completely different product.
How do steel shingles hold up in Michigan winters?
Exceptionally well. Steel sheds snow instead of holding it, which reduces ice dam risk. It’s impervious to freeze-thaw cracking that degrades asphalt over time. It’s also rated for high wind uplift — critical during Michigan’s spring and fall storm seasons. Most steel shingle systems carry a Class 4 impact rating, the highest available.
How much more do steel shingles cost than asphalt?
Steel typically runs 2–3x the upfront cost of a premium asphalt installation. On a 2,000 sq ft Michigan home, expect $22,000–$35,000 installed vs. $10,000–$16,000 for premium asphalt. The math shifts over time: steel lasts 40–60 years with minimal maintenance, while asphalt will need replacement in 25–35 years. Most steel roofs pay for the cost difference within 15–20 years.
What warranty comes with steel shingles?
Steel shingle warranties vary by manufacturer but commonly include a 50-year limited material warranty, a lifetime wind warranty (up to 130+ mph), and a Class 4 impact rating that can reduce your homeowner’s insurance premium. Weather Vane will walk you through the specific coverage for the product you select before you commit.
Rubber Shingles
What are rubber shingles actually made from?
Euroshield rubber shingles — the brand we install — are made from recycled vehicle tires. Roughly 95% of each shingle is post-consumer rubber content. That makes them one of the most environmentally friendly roofing materials available while also being among the most durable. The recycled rubber is dense, flexible, and UV-stabilized to maintain color and structure for decades.
How long do Euroshield rubber shingles last?
Euroshield warranties their shingles for 50 years — and the product has real-world track record to back it up. Because rubber doesn’t absorb water, crack in freeze-thaw cycles, or degrade from UV the way asphalt does, maintenance needs are minimal over that lifespan. In Michigan’s climate, rubber shingles are genuinely one of the longest-lasting options available.
Are rubber shingles a good fit for Michigan weather specifically?
Yes — arguably the best fit of any material. Rubber shingles are rated Class 4 impact (the highest rating for hail resistance), carry a Class A fire rating, and are unaffected by the freeze-thaw cycles that crack and curl asphalt over time. The flexibility of the rubber actually helps it absorb impacts that would fracture harder materials. For Michigan homeowners who want a true set-it-and-forget-it roof, rubber is a strong choice.
Do rubber shingles look like real slate or shake?
Yes. Euroshield offers profiles that replicate the look of natural slate and cedar shake with surprising accuracy. Because the molds are cast from real materials, the texture and shadow lines read as genuine stone or wood from the street. You get the premium curb appeal of slate or shake without the weight, fragility, cost, or maintenance of the natural materials.
