Got Questions?

Common Questions By Shingle Type

Asphalt Shingles

Most Atlas asphalt shingles carry a limited lifetime warranty. Real-world lifespan in Michigan typically runs 25–40 years depending on product tier, attic ventilation, and weather exposure. Premium lines like Pinnacle® Pristine with Scotchgard™ protection are engineered for the longer end of that range.

Economy shingles meet code and look clean but use lighter-weight mats and fewer granules. Standard dimensional shingles add wind resistance and a longer warranty. Premium architectural shingles add Scotchgard™ coating, heavier mats, enhanced impact ratings, and Atlas Signature Select® system coverage when installed by a Platinum Certified contractor like Weather Vane.

Yes. Weather Vane’s Platinum status unlocks the Atlas Signature Select® Roofing System — Atlas’s top-tier warranty package. It adds a 50-year workmanship warranty and non-prorated coverage that standard contractors cannot offer, covering both materials and labor for qualifying Atlas systems.

Yes, with precautions. Shingle seal strips need temperatures above 40°F to self-seal; below that our crews hand-tab each shingle. We install year-round when the roof deck is dry and safe to work on. If you have an active leak, we’ll tarp and stabilize immediately.

Steel Shingles

No — this is the most common misconception. Steel shingles are installed over solid decking with underlayment, which absorbs sound the same way asphalt does. The “loud metal roof” reputation comes from exposed agricultural panels with no decking underneath — a completely different product.

Exceptionally well. Steel sheds snow instead of holding it, reducing ice dam risk. It’s impervious to freeze-thaw cracking and rated for high wind uplift — critical during Michigan’s spring and fall storm seasons. Most steel shingle systems carry a Class 4 impact rating.

Steel typically runs 2–3× the upfront cost of premium asphalt. The math shifts over time: steel lasts 40–60 years with minimal maintenance while asphalt needs replacement in 25–35 years. Most steel roofs pay for the difference within 15–20 years.

Steel shingle warranties commonly include a 50-year limited material warranty, a lifetime wind warranty (130+ mph), and a Class 4 impact rating that can reduce your homeowner’s insurance premium. Weather Vane will walk you through specific coverage before you commit.

Rubber Shingles

Euroshield rubber shingles — the brand we install — are made from recycled vehicle tires. Roughly 95% of each shingle is post-consumer rubber content, making them one of the most environmentally friendly roofing materials available while also being among the most durable.

Euroshield warranties their shingles for 50 years — and the product has real-world track record to back it up. Because rubber doesn’t absorb water, crack in freeze-thaw cycles, or degrade from UV the way asphalt does, maintenance needs are minimal over that entire lifespan.

Yes — arguably the best fit of any material. Rubber shingles are rated Class 4 impact (the highest for hail resistance), carry a Class A fire rating, and are unaffected by the freeze-thaw cycles that crack and curl asphalt over time. For homeowners who want a true set-it-and-forget-it roof, rubber is a strong choice.

Yes. Euroshield offers profiles that replicate the look of natural slate and cedar shake. Because the molds are cast from real materials, the texture and shadow lines read as genuine stone or wood from the street — without the weight, fragility, cost, or maintenance of natural materials.
